Audrey GUENICHE is a Doctor in Pharmacy and has a PhD in skin biology. She has a distinguished career of over three decades at L’Oréal in Research and Innovation. Her scientific contributions have been in the areas of topical and food supplements of skin, scalp, hair health and beauty. Audrey’s experience is extensive: from vitro to clinical trials, to open innovation and development. She has published over 140 papers in peer-reviewed journals, presented in 87 international congresses and, additionally, has been recognized and guest speaker in 52 plenary conferences.
By embracing an innovative mindset, Audrey is passionate in finding new areas to promote actives and formulas, prove new claims and scientific communications, and reinvent evaluations. As HELENA RUBINSTEIN’s Scientific Director, Audrey pursues the brand’s long-standing avant-garde research and science.
Benjamin co-founded Exeliom Biosciences in December 2016, and has been the CEO of the company since. Exeliom Biosciences is specialized in the development of novel therapeutic approaches against immune-mediated diseases, that are more suited to chronic administration than current medicines. Exelioms lead program, EXL01, has obtained approval to enter the clinic for the maintenance of remission in Crohns Disease. Benjamin is an entrepreneur who developed a wide range of skills in various industries such as investment banking (UBS), venture capital (Pacific Channel), pharmaceutical regulatory affairs (Amgen), biotech operations (Theravectys) and applied research (Vision Institute in Paris). Benjamin has a masters degree in management from ESSEC Business School (after Classes Prpa) and a masters degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology from Sorbonne University.
Dr. Christopher Martonis responsibilities include clinical development and scientific opportunities for new and existing probiotic products. Prior to Chr. Hansen, Dr. Martoni worked as Principal Scientist at UAS Labs and Research Team Leader at Micropharma Limited, with both roles focused on probiotic strain development for targeted health applications. Dr. Martoni received a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He is joint inventor of several granted patents and co-author of 50 peer-reviewed publications primarily on probiotic clinical benefits, mechanisms of action and applications.
Dr. Ilia Belotserkovsky is a Scientific Project Manager in the Microbiota Program of BIOASTER a French technological research institute in the field of microbiology. After obtaining a Ph.D. degree in the department of Medical Microbiology in Hebrew institute of Jerusalem (Israel) focused on molecular mechanisms of pathogenic bacteria, he continued the investigation of host-microbe interactions in Pasteur Institute in Paris (France) investigating the bacterial impact on immune response. Since Dr. Belotserkovsky joined BIAOSTER in 2019, he is in charge of the design and the execution coordination of collaborative projects with academic and industrial partners in the domain of Microbiota. His special attention is given to building in-vitro / ex-vivo models recapitulating the complex interplay between intestinal microbiota, host epithelial surfaces and immune system.
Alessio Mylonas joined AC Immune, a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company, in 2021 where he supports innovation and drug development efforts for neurodegenerative diseases and dermatological indications. Before joining AC Immune, he was lead immunologist for a European Horizon consortium on the link between the microbiome and Alzheimers disease at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (EPFL), where he pursued the discovery of new therapeutic targets for neuroinflammation. Prior to this, he was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship to study the link between the microbiome and rosacea at the University Hospital of Lausanne (CHUV). Alessio received a PhD in Immunology from the University of Lausanne (UNIL) with a focus on dermatological diseases, a M.Phil. from the Medical Research Councils Toxicology Unit, and a B.Sc. from the University of Sussex.
In 2016 Aletta Kraneveld (MSc Pharmacy & pharmacologist) was appointed as full professor Interdisciplinary Translational Pharmacology at the Faculty of Science of the Utrecht University. She has published >160 papers (H-index: 51). Besides science, she is an active member of several boards of (inter)national scientific and societal organizations (Dutch Society of Pharmacology, EPHAR, IUPHAR, Netherlands Federation of Innovative Drug research; Diversity committee UU; Food Lives-NL). December 2022 Kraneveld became the dean of the faculty of Science at the VU University, Amsterdam and she still holds a chair position at Utrecht University. Kranevelds current research interests involve targeting the interaction between innate and adaptive immunity as well as host-microbiome interactions in chronic (inflammatory) diseases with pharmaceutical as well as nutritional interventions. The Kraneveld group is focusing research to in depth study the role of the gut-immune system-brain-axis in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorders. Results will further enhance the knowledge of the interaction of microbiome with the immune and nervous systems in chronic conditions in the CNS. Aletta Kraneveld has set up a program that is a (inter)national neuro-immune platform where academia, patient organizations and industry meet for research on the gut-immune-brain axis as target for medicine and medical food concepts.
Alon Rothfusz is one of QIAGENs Digital PCR Specialists currently working in the Benelux and the Nordics. He studied Medical Biology at the Radboud University Nijmegen (the Netherlands), where he received his Masters degree in 2015. With over 8 years experience in the scientific industry, Alons expertise spans many applications in the pharma, microbiome and research fields. During the last five years, Alon has specialised in instrumentation and has gained expertise in the field of liquid handling, molecular diagnostics, PCR and extraction reagents, gel electrophoresis, and many more. Alons most recent focus has been in the field of Digital PCR and supporting his customers to accelerate their research with the innovative QIAcuity Digital PCR System. In addition to technical training and support, Alon is involved in the development of new assays and regularly liaises with customers and internal QIAGEN experts to further optimize the QIAcuity platform.
Dr. Finzel earned her doctorate from the Max Delbrck Center for Molecular Medicine/Free University in Berlin. Afterward, she spent over three years working in the precision oncology field and acquired broad experience in cancer treatment management and tumor biomarkers. She joined Bio-Me in December 2020 as Senior Scientist and is currently involved in projects studying the influence of gut, vaginal, and skin microbiomes in health and disease.
Andrea Holst is a research scientist in Chr. Hansen HMO and works with a focus on microbiome analysis. Her investigations focus on how human milk oligosaccharides and other prebiotics shape the gut microbiome, including the elucidation and modulation of commensal bacteria and the inhibition of undesired microbes. She earned her PhD at the Technical University of Denmark at the Research Group of Gut, Microbes and Health studying probiotic bacteria with a focus on HMOs. She has a masters degree in Microbiology from the University of Copenhagen.
Dr. Arthur Ouwehand is a Technical Fellow at International Flavors and Fragrances, Kantvik, Finland, since 2004. He received his M.Sc. (1992) from Wageningen University (Netherlands) and his Ph.D. (1996) from University of Gothenburg (Sweden). Since 1999 he is functioning as Adjunct Professor at the University of Turku (Finland). He has published more than 300 articles about probiotics, prebiotics and the human microbiota. He is also active in various organisations that promote probiotics. Dr. Ouwehand has regularly worked with the International Dairy Federation (IDF) and is one of the authors of the Inventory of microorganisms with documented history of use in food. He is also an active contributor to the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP). From 2011 to 2022 he has been chairman of the Scientific Committee of the International Probiotics Association (IPA). Where he has promoted probiotic science, supporting IPA in its communication and in urgent responses to the media. From 2013 to 2016 and again since 2020 Dr. Ouwehand is chairman of the Probiotic Task Force of the International Life Science Institute (ILSI) Europe.
Aurlien Baudot is the CEO and co-founder of Cryptobiotix, a preclinical CRO specialising in gut microbiome research. He holds dual masters in bioscience engineering and artificial intelligence from KU Leuven, and began his career in technical sales, where he helped introduce innovative automation solutions to laboratories. Driven by his passion for complex biological systems, he later shifted his focus to gut microbiome research and co-founded Cryptobiotix in 2021. As CEO, Aurlien aims to foster a thriving, inclusive work environment, and he also manages the business development. He enjoys thinking about processes and structures in business and complex data, and collaborates with his team to develop experimental approaches that best address customers’ research questions. Aurlien and his co-founder have developed the SIFR technology, a validated lab model that predicts how products interact with individuals’ gut microbiomes, helping to reduce clinical trial risks and bring gut health products to market more efficiently.
Bernd Stahl is the R&D Director of Human Milk Research & Analytical Science at Danone Nutricia Research, Utrecht, and an Associate Professor within the Chemical Biology & Drug Discovery Group at the Department of Pharmaceutical Science at the Utrecht University, Netherlands. Furthermore, Bernd Stahl is currently a visiting researcher at the Department of Biochemistry, Center for Biomedical Mass Spectrometry at Boston University School of Medicine, Boston, USA. He received his PhD in the area of analytical glycobiology at the University of Muenster, Germany. He has a strong background in biochemical research and has been making a significant contribution to human milk science for more than 30 years. Bernd Stahl is the author and co-author of more than 150 scientific publications, reviews, and book chapters. Currently, his research focuses on understanding factors that influence and are influenced by breastfeeding and human milk, beyond nutrition. This will pave the way for the creation of innovative, specialized nutritionally or therapeutically relevant solutions.
Brian is a US National and holds a PhD in Molecular Microbiology from Tufts University working under Dr. Linden Hu in the Department of Molecular Biology and Microbiology. His doctoral thesis work focused on developing and using transposon mutagenesis coupled with high-throughput sequencing to understand virulence mechanisms in the causative agent of gum disease, Porphyromonas gingivalis. Brian then received a Sloan Foundation grant for his postdoc to work on salivary, nasal, and environmental microbiomes of athletes in the lab of Dr. Katherine Lemon. Following his postdoc Brian transitioned to industry where he worked for 3 years at Vedanta Biosciences, a gut microbiome therapeutics company, as the Team Lead for both the Microbiology and Translational Medicine groups. Brian then started his own company, BrickBuilt Therapeutics, focused on developing oral microbiome therapeutics. BrickBuilt Therapeutics was acquired after 14 months by DermBiont, Inc., a skin microbiome therapeutics company, where Brian most recently worked until joining DSM. At DSM, Brian is working to strengthen DSMs capabilities in the Microbiome space, beginning with gut health.
Chemical engineer with a PhD in biochemistry (CEA/University of Paris-Saclay), I took a post-doctoral position at Institut Pasteur before joining LOral R&I in 2011. There, I developed academic research partnerships focused on the skin microbiome, including a number of dandruff projects in Brazil, China and Japan. The results of these partnerships supported marketing for brands of the LOral Group such as Vichy and La Roche Posay. Since 2017, I have focused on building knowledge related to the impact of pollution and ageing on the microbiome, as well as reconstructed skin models colonised by bacteria, drawing on this knowledge to support launches such as Gnifique Lancme based on the science of the microbiome. During this time, I have led projects on the impact of the microbiome on the signs of ageing and skin quality. Today, I am leading a laboratory withing LOral Advanced Research, focused on increasing our understanding of the role of skin and scalp micro-organisms in the main skin functions, to drive innovation in the treatment of cosmetic disorders as well as the signs of ageing.
Céline Druart obtained her PhD degree in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences from UCLouvain (Belgium) in 2014. She then joined the research group of Patrice Cani to lead a 3-year project devoted to the development and exploitation of the promising results regarding the beneficial effects of Akkermansia muciniphila, a commensal gut bacterium. Taking advantage of her Master’s in Management, she worked for 3 years as Scientific and Business Project Manager at A-Mansia Biotech, an innovative microbiome company developing health products based on the unique properties of A. muciniphila. In July 2021, she joined the Pharmabiotic Research Institute (PRI) as Microbiome Project Manager. She is in charge of the Regulatory Science activities of the organization; coordinating Task Group work, focusing on the emergence of new scientific and technological standards, and supporting PRI Regulatory Members in their development efforts.
A leader of scientific innovation and a winner of the Petri Bio Emerging Women Founder Award, Cheri co-founded Concerto to reinvent humanitys relationship with microbes. Cheri led Concerto to raise oversubscribed Seed and Series A investment rounds, fueling the companys development of transformative microbial treatments and industry partnerships. Cheri has built a strong company culture centered around rigorous science, intent listening, and compassion. She holds a PhD in Chemistry from UC Berkeley (Hertz Fellow) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard (NIH Kirschstein Fellow).
Dr Chrysi Sergaki is the Microbiome Group Leader at the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), UK, leading the microbiome standardisation program, with 18 World Health Organization (WHO) endorsed projects to develop International Reference Reagents for the microbiome field as well as research projects investigating the role of the microbiome in AMR, cancer immunotherapies and vaginal infections. She has developed the Whole Cell reference reagent for the DNA extraction of microbiome samples and led the establishment of the 1st WHO International DNA Reference Reagents for microbiome analysis, by coordinating a large, international collaborative study. Chrysi is leading a project that aims to establish guidelines for microbiome therapeutics and diagnostics, in order to facilitate the regulatory process and ensure patient safety. Before joining the MHRA, Chrysi completed her PhD at the University of Warwick, UK, researching microbial interactions in fungi and bacteria and their impact on the host.
Dr Derlot received her Master in Bioprocess engineering from the renowned INSA school in Toulouse France in 2012 she then went on to complete her PhD in Industrial Biotechnology at AgroParisTech in 2015.
Claire began working at Biose Industrie in 2015 as an R&D Process Engineer since then she has grown within the company as a pioneer of our CDMO business model for LBPs.
After 4 years spent working as a Program Leader for a number of different customers in the US, Europe and Korea Claire was promoted to Head of Programs with a team of 12 Program Managers and Program Leaders reporting to her for over 35 LBP clinical programs.
She is experienced in Process & analytical methods development, Regulatory and manufacturing to be a scientific and Business interlocutor for any Programs, from Strain isolation to Drug Product delivery.
Dan Brownell is the Senior Director of Research and Development at AOBiome Therapeutics, responsible for leading their preclinical and R&D programs since joining in 2018. Dan brings 20 years of scientific experience, with a focus on the use of microorganisms to achieve positive outcomes. At AOBiome, Dan leads a high-performing team of scientists responsible for better understanding the mechanisms of action of Ammonia Oxidizing Bacteria and their use as a treatment for inflammatory disease. Prior to AOBiome, Dan held diverse roles within the biotech community, including in the fields of rapid diagnostics, synthetic biology, and biofuels.
Prof. David MacIntyres research is focused on investigating the dynamic relationship between microbiota of the reproductive tract and womens health and disease states, particularly during pregnancy. This is achieved through the application of systems modelling approaches that involve integration and analysis of genomic, transcriptomic, microbiomic and metabolic profiling data. It is hoped that this will lead to improved diagnostic and predictive tools useful for patient stratification and ultimately, improved pregnancy outcomes.
Professor Denise Kelly joined Seventure Partners, a European Leader in Venture Capital, in 2015 as an Investment Advisor to the Life Sciences Team and is focused specifically, on Human Microbiome investment opportunities, globally. Prior to joining Seventure, Denise was Head of her Research Lab at the World-renowned Rowett Institute, University of Aberdeen, where she acquired over 20 years experience in gut microbiology and immunology. She was the (former) Founder Director, CEO and CSO of GT Biologics Ltd, one of the first translational spinouts, developing Innovative Microbiome-based Therapies. She is the main inventor on numerous EU and USA patent applications and during her career has collaborated with pharmaceutical and healthcare companies on several translational projects.Denise holds a BSc and PhD from Queens University, Belfast and an Emeritus Professorship from the University of Aberdeen.
Eline Klaassens is a human gut microbiome specialist and Product Manager Human Health at BaseClear. Eline completed an MSc in Food Science and Biotechnology, followed by a PhD in Microbial Ecology in the Human Gastrointestinal tract, both from Wageningen University in the Netherlands. At WUR she investigated the functionality of bifidobacteria in the infant and adult gut using metaproteomics and transcriptomics. She held several post-doctoral positions in industry-academic consortia, government research organisations and academia in the Netherlands and Australia, including CSIRO (Australia), where her study focused on functional analysis of novel isolated species and biopsies related to IBD and colon cancer using (meta)-transcriptomics, and the University of Sydney, where her work covered the effect of diet in metabolic disease on the microbiome. At BaseClear Eline is advising clients about genomics analyses for expert projects for clinical trials and the food industry.
Elisa Chiquet Iraizos is a business-oriented scientist with a degree in biology and nutrition, as well as an MBA. She has extensive experience working for multinational companies in the retail, food, and ingredient manufacturing industries, including Carrefour, Unilever, Danone, and IFF. Elisa has held various commercial roles throughout her career, focusing on pricing, business development, and procurement. Currently, she is the Chief Operating Officer at Hellobiome, where she leads the microbiome revolution for the skin. Elisa’s passion for the microbiome stems from her time at Danone, where she witnessed the impact of the gut microbiome on their top-selling products. Elisa is thrilled to be part of the Hellobiome team and is committed to developing innovative commercial strategies that will drive the success of Hellobiome.
Liz works in Owlstone Medical as Head of Business Development in Europe. She has deep scientific roots, with a biochemistry background and a PhD from the University of Cambridge in bioanalytics, as well as several years consulting experience on challenging technical innovation projects for companies like Mondalez, J&J, P&G and Shell. For the last decade, she has focussed on her passion: helping companies with potentially life-changing innovative technologies bring them to where they can be most useful. In her role in Owlstone, she works with European-based companies and leading academics to help them utilize breath as a biomarker matrix to advance their research.
Francois-Pierre Martin, PhD, Eng., is currently Senior Manager, Global Translational Science & Communication at the H&H group, Switzerland for pediatric and adult nutrition and care products since 2022. Francois-Pierre has 16 years industry experience in nutrition and health research for pediatric and adult conditions. He received his Ph.D. in biochemistry and metabonomics from Imperial College London, UK in 2006, and has a background in biotechnology and microbiology from the engineering school Polytech-Marseille, France. From 2006 to 2012, Franois-Pierre has pioneered metabolomics applications to clinical nutrition and gut microbiota research at Nestl Research. From 2012 to 2019, he led systems biology and clinical research with emphasis on pediatric and adult conditions (inflammatory diseases, metabolic syndrome and diabetes) and host-microbial metabolic interactions. Since 2019, Dr. Martin led science translation and strategic innovation for nutrition and care solutions for school age children and adult populations. Dr. Martin has authored over 100 peer-reviewed articles, 6 book chapters and 20 patents.
Frank Schuren received his PhD at Groningen University in 1987 on the molecular biological analysis of fungal development. After a postdoc in Groningen and at the ETH Zurich in Switzerland he joined TNO in 1996. At TNO he started the implementation of microarray technology in applied research which led to successful implementation in applied microbial research. These include novel diagnostic tools such as the Legionella chip and the analysis of complex microbial populations (such as the intestinal and vaginal microbiota). Geoff spent almost 30 years conducting scientific research in an academic environment developing his skills as a molecular biologist and biotechnologist, with 13 years dedicated to the study of the bacterial DNA replication and repair. In 2014, he left the academic world to join Walgreens Boots Alliance, and has spent the last 8 years immersed in the area of consumer skincare, where he has developed a passion for the skin microbiome. Helena Falholt Elvebakken is a research scientist at Lactobio A/S, a Danish company that works with isolation and selection of precision probiotic lactic acid bacteria with targeted functionalities. Focus is on solving skin problems associated with dysbiosis of the skin microbiota. There, she has been heading research on microbial dysbiosis and ageing of human skin. Originally, she got her Masters degree in biotechnology engineering from Technical University of Denmark in 2021 with a specialty in complex biosystems engineering and interactions, and a M. Sc. thesis on the investigation of antimicrobial activity and mechanisms of lactic acid bacteria towards Candida albicans.
Henrik Roager is an Associate Professor and Head of the Gut Microbes, Diet and Health research group at the Department of Nutrition, Exercise and Sports, University of Copenhagen. He and his group seek to understand the mechanisms by which the gut microbiota contributes to food digestion and health by combining the fields of metabolomics, gut microbiota and human nutrition. Henrik holds a PhD from the Technical University of Denmark (2016). He is a recipient of the American Society of Nutrition E.L.R. Stokstad Award (2022), the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) Drummond Early Career Scientist Award (2019), and received recently a prestigious Sapere Aude: DFF-Starting Grant (2020) to establish his own group at University of Copenhagen. Henrik Roager has published >30 papers including corresponding and first authorships in high ranking journals such as Nature Microbiology, Gut, and Nature Communications.
Ina Schuppe Koistinen, PhD, Associate Professor, holds the position as Alliance Director at the Centre for Translational Microbiome Research (CTMR). Ina has an education in biochemistry, toxicology and a PhD in Medicine from Karolinska Institutet. She has pursued a career in pharma industry and academia in both pre-clinical and clinical Drug R&D in translational medicine research in CNS, respiratory, autoimmunity, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases focusing on biomarker discovery based on omics technologies, systems-based data integration and clinical biomarker qualification. Her current research interest is in understanding the role of the microbiome to health with a focus on female reproduction.
Ioannis is a clinical research fellow in paediatric heamato-oncology. He obtained his primary medical qualification from Barts and The London School of Medicine and continued his postgraduate research training in translational cancer immunology at Kings College London focusing on anti-cancer peptide vaccine design and humoral cancer immunosurveillance. After developing a specialist research interest in the role of the gut microbiome in health and disease, he joined the group of Professor Sir Mel Greaves at the Institute of Cancer research to support the development of clinical studies investigating the role of the gut microbiome in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Iris Sommer studied medicine in Amsterdam and obtained her PhD (cum laude) in Utrecht on language in schizophrenia. She started the Voices Clinic Utrecht and investigated the cerebral basis of auditory verbal hallucinations. She also gathered a multidisciplinary team to study language as a biomarker for schizophrenia using computational linguistics. In 2017 she moved to the north to become director of the Research Institute Brain and Cognition in UMC Groningen. She started the HAMLETT-OPHELIA cohort to study effects of maintenance medication and investigated optimal treatment for women with schizophrenia. She now leads a team of 20 PhD students and 5 postdocs. Iris authored four popular scientific books from which two became best-sellers.
In my role as Department Head Microbiology, I manage R&D projects that match my passion for finding new ways to use microorganisms to improve food and health. Together, my team and I take on a broad range of topics: from dairy, microbial and plant protein fermentation, to process development of pro/pre/postbiotics, to food safety and chain control. Our end goal is to help our customers optimise the use of microorganisms to safely and cost-effectively enhance the health benefits of products for the food, cosmetic and pharma markets. After obtaining my PhD degree studying the anaerobic gut symbiont bacterium Akkermansia from Wageningen University & Research, I have worked for both pharma and food industry. Dr. Jonathan Lane is currently a Senior Manager and Head of the Global Research Program with the Health & Happiness Group, a global leader in premium nutrition and wellness for all life stages. Prior to joining H&H, Jonathan was the Infant Nutrition Program Manager for Food for Health Ireland which united world-class science and industry experience to improve health through innovation of food. Jonathan also served as a Research Officer at the Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, where he isolated and structurally and functionally characterised food source bioactives. He completed his PhD in Glycobiology at Teagasc through University College Dublin and has a BSc in Microbiology from University College Cork.
Jonathan Swann is a Professor of Biomolecular Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton and Visiting Professor in the Department of Metabolism, Digestion, and Reproduction at Imperial College London. He leads a metabolomic-based research programme to understand the influence of gene-environment interactions on the mammalian metabolic system and their implications for development, health, and disease. His primary interests involve developing analytical techniques and models to study the metabolic interactions between the gut microbiome and the mammalian host and he has a specific interest in the microbiota-gut-brain axis.
Josef is Director of Integrative Systems Biology at Clinical Microbiomics and holds a PhD in microbiome analysis and machine learning from the Technical University of Denmark. Josef has been working in the microbiome field for over a decade specialising in integrative systems biology, with a particular focus on investigating host-microbiome interactions using data integration and machine learning methods. Since joining the team in 2021, Josef has worked on a wide range of microbiome studies involving extensive data analysis, alongside developing and optimizing the microbiome pipeline. With a natural drive and curiosity, Josef currently leads the operational multi-omics data integration efforts at Clinical Microbiomics.
Karin Strijbis is a group leader in the Infectious Diseases and Immunology division at Utrecht University. Her group studies bacterial infections at mucosal surfaces including the intestine, respiratory epithelium, and the vagina. In her work, she tries to understand the impact of bacterial interactions with mucin proteins on health and disease and uncover the underlying molecular mechanisms. She is the recipient of an ERC-Starting grant with a focus on intestinal bacteria-mucin interactions and her collaborative work on the impact of vaginal bacteria on HIV infection is supported by a ZonMW-TOP grant.
Dr Koen Hogenelst is a neuroscientist with a PhD in psychopharmacology. He is a senior scientist at TNO, a Dutch not-for-profit applied science organisation. His research interests include assessing mental health and cognition and interventions to improve or maintain those outcomes, often using a multidisciplinary approach. Current research focuses on the role of nutrition and sleep in military mental health and performance and on the gut-brain axis. Governmental as well as private parties fund his research.

Luc Sterkman, MD (CEO) obtained his medical degree (MD) in 1988 at the Free University in Amsterdam. He has broad experience in the fields of general management, business development and R&D. From 1992-2002 he was COO and later CEO of U-Gene Research, that was successfully sold to Kendle USA (NASDAQ KNDL). From 2002 to 2004, he worked as a Board member of the biotech company OctoPlus and from 2005 to 2010 he was General manager at the pharmaceutical company Disphar International BV (part of the Nordic Group). From 2011-2016 he worked as a COO at Newtricious, which company is focusing on innovative nutrition and functional foods. As the CEO at Caelus Health, he is since January 2016 overall responsible for building and directing the company in the next phase of growth and further expanding its pipeline of new microbiota-based products in the field of cardio-metabolic diseases.
Dr. Lucien Harthoorn has an MSc in Biomedical Sciences with specialisation in Pharmacology from the Free University Amsterdam, the Netherlands and holds a PhD in Metabolic Physiology from Utrecht University, the Netherlands. He had various R&D positions both in academia and corporate companies in the Netherlands, USA and UK leading research programmes in Neurosciences, Endocrinology, Paediatrics, Food Allergy, Gastroenterology and Medical Nutrition. He is currently Director Research & Development at Clasado Biosciences Ltd., United Kingdom. Lucien is (co)author of more than 50 scientific publications and (co)inventor of 10 patents. He is a guest lecturer in Pharmacology, Physiology and Nutrition.
Dr Lynne Sykes is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in Obstetrics at Imperial College London. She manages women at high risk of preterm birth at St Marys and Queen Charlottes Hospital, London. The preterm birth prevention service cares for approximately 700 women a year and utilises transvaginal ultrasounds to aid with prediction, and cervical cerclage and/or progesterone as therapeutic interventions. Her research interest in is the role of the immune response in preterm birth. She obtained her PhD in 2012, reporting on the potential role of immunomodulators in the prevention of preterm labour. She leads a research group at the Imperial College March of Dimes Prematurity Research Centre, exploring the role of the innate an adaptive immune response in microbial driven preterm birth.

With over 30 years of operational management, entrepreneurial, venture capital investment and leadership experience, he has focused his professional career on company creation and building value in technology and biotechnology companies. Before founding Microbiome Insights, he was the co-founder and CEO of Indel Therapeutics Inc., a biopharmaceutical company dedicated to developing new drugs to address the global health crisis caused by antibiotic resistance. Prior to this, Malcolm was an investment professional with life science venture capital firms MDS Capital (now Lumira Capital), BioVista Capital (now Hatteras Venture Partners) and Intersouth Partners. Before entering business, he served in the U.S. Army as an Infantry and Special Forces officer. Malcolm has been an advisor and board member to numerous companies and organizations and is currently a member of the board of directors of SemiosBio Technologies, a mentor for the entrepreneurship@UBC program and an adjunct professor at the MBA program at Simon Fraser University. Maria Carmen Collado, PhD in Biotechnology (2005), Research Scientist at the Institute of Agrochemistry and Food Technology-Spanish National Research Council (IATA-CSIC), Valencia, Spain. Her research work is multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, food science and nutrition areas. Her interests are focused on probiotics, microbiota and health and nutrition during pregnancy and early life period. She has published over 200 papers in peer-reviewed and indexed scientific journals on the subject of microbiota, Probiotics and health. Marine PARAT is a Senior Manager of the Skin Science & Technology department at COTY Lancaster R&D Based in Monaco. She obtained her engineer degree in Biology from the Ecole des Bio-Industries in Paris. In the first part of her career, she studied gene and protein expression of typical markers involved in epidermal regeneration, developing new epithelial models for the evaluation of topically applied molecules. Since 2017, she has been working at Coty where she is in charge of the Innovation and Microbiome platforms.
Since 2019, she has been working in the Pharmaco-clinical department – Applied Research – R&D Division, Dermo-Cosmetics & Personal Care of the Pierre Fabre Group. She is in charge of clinical studies on skin microbiota dysbiosis in acne and seborrheic dermatitis. Previously, she worked for 8 years in biotechnology and 22 years in microbiology to study microorganisms in different ecosystems such as oil wells, leaf surfaces, soil or skin.

Monas research focus is to better understand how the gut microbial-local immune axis contributes to infant and paediatric homeostasis with a specific focus on clinical conditions including allergy and Graft versus Host Disease, the latter a major cause of mortality post-transplantation. Mona is currently the chair of the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) Gut Microbiome for Health expert panel and a member of the BSG Food and Function clinical research group.
Dr. Moran Yassour is an assistant professor at the Hebrew University, Faculty of Medicine, with joint affiliation at the school of Computer Science and Engineering. The Yassour lab studies the development of the human microbiome in health and disease, by developing new cohorts to study the establishment of the newborn gut microbiome and characterize the mother-to-child bacterial transmission. Dr. Yassour did her postdoctoral training at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University, with Ramnik Xavier and Eric Lander, where she studied the human gut microbiome. During her PhD in the Friedman (HebrewU) and Regev (MIT/Broad) labs, she developed tools to reconstruct the transcriptome of partially assembled genomes and aberrant cancer genomes. Dr Yassour received her B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in the Computer Science and Computational Biology program at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Dr. Isaksen earned his doctorate in Biotechnology from the University of Oslo. As part of his doctorate, he was visiting scholar at UC Berkeley, and at The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany. He has been in involved in the microbiome field for more than a decade, acting as consultant for many commercial biotech companies and established and run several biotech companies in Norway and the UK. Most recently, Dr. Isaksen, founded and was the CEO of Genetic Analysis from 2008 to 2013, and in 2016 founded Bio-Me and is currently the companys Chief Innovation Officer.
Olaf Larsen studied chemistry at the VU University Amsterdam and obtained a PhD in physics there as well. Following postdoctoral research in New York City and Amsterdam, he continued his career within industry. Olaf worked for ASML, TNO and as a consultant life sciences within various organizations. Since 2012 he is heading the Science department at Yakult Nederland B.V., and member of the Management Team. Since 2016, he is also part time Asst. Professor. at the VU University focusing on One Health in relation to microbiota management, using various research techniques like computational modeling.

Oliver completed his PhD in molecular genetics as a scholar at the Genome Institute of Singapore from 2014-2018, and has won multiple awards including the P&G Young Entrepreneurship Scheme, presented at the Royal Society in London in 2017; and the top prize at the L’Oréal Innovation Runway 2018. Oliver has previously founded Anya Consulting, a healthcare communications company that has published >150 articles and has produced several technical whitepapers for clients like Fierce Health. Prior, Oliver completed his BSc at Edinburgh University, including six months at Leiden University Medical Centre through the Erasmus Programme.
Omry Koren is a Professor at the Azrieli Faculty of Medicine. His principle field of research is the human microbiome. Prof. Koren received his MSc and his PhD in Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology from Tel-Aviv University in Israel. At that time, he was involved with the innovative paper The Coral Probiotic Hypothesis which has now been expanded to The Hologenome Theory of Evolution. His teams research aims to better understand the interactions between microbiota and the host endocrine system, host behaviour, and host development, in health and in disease states. He has received the prestigious Minerva Award for Research Cooperation and High Excellence in Science, the Alon Fellowship for outstanding young scientists and was also recently awarded an ERC consolidator grant to study the microbiome and social behavior. For the past five years Prof. Koren has also been part of the worlds highly cited researchers (top 1%).
Pascal Yvon has more than 25 years of global experience in life sciences, including the cosmetic, biotech, pharmaceutical, and diagnostics sectors, covering sales, marketing, business development and general management positions in both small and large companies. Having spent half of his career based in France and half in the USA, Pascal has acquired commercial expertise with a multi-cultural sensitivity and an international approach. He has authored many trade journal articles and regularly speaks at leading industry events and conferences. Dr. Yvon holds a doctorate in pharmacy from the Pharmacy University, Paris and an Executive MBA from Rutgers University, NJ, USA. He is a member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists, NY Chapter.
Patrick received his PhD in Molecular Microbiology with honors from Albert-Ludwigs-Universitt Freiburg, Germany. His research focused on the functional characterization of protein complexes in hyperthermophilic Archaea. In 2020, he joined the R&D Department of Zymo Research Europe where he serves as the Laboratory Director. Patrick was responsible for establishing the Microbiome Analysis Service Laboratory at Zymo Research Europe and is interested in standardization and new methodology in the Microbiome field.
Paul Wilmes is Full Professor of Systems Ecology and holds appointments at the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB) and in the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine within the Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine of the University of Luxembourg. He heads the Systems Ecology Research group at the LCSB. Paul Wilmes earned his PhD from the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia in Norwich in 2006. For part of his doctoral research, he was a visiting scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology in Bremen. He subsequently carried out postdoctoral research at the University of California, Berkeley from where he returned in 2009 to his native Luxembourg through the ATTRACT fellowship scheme of the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR). He initially established his research group at the Centre de Recherche Public Gabriel Lippmann but later joined the LCSB. Prof. Wilmes is an elected full member of the Institut Grand-Ducal, Section des Sciences naturelles, physiques et mathmatiques, and of the Acadmie Lorraine des Sciences. In 2019, Paul received an ERC Consolidator Grant for his project ExpoBiome which explores the interactions between microbial molecules and the human immune system in patients with Parkinson’s disease and rheumatoid arthritis.
Dr Paula Perez Pardo studied Molecular Biology at the Autonoma University in Madrid and at the Free University in Berlin. During her PhD thesis at the Utrecht Institute for Pharmaceutical Sciences, she studied the role of microbiota-gut-brain interactions in the pathogenesis of Parkinsons disease. She was appointed as an Assistant Professor in 2020 and she is now excited about the perspective of applying innovative techniques and technologies to identify the mechanisms allowing gut bacteria/pathogens to trigger (neurological) disorders, such as Parkinsons disease, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. At the same time, she is strongly committed to achieving measurable societal impact by identifying novel diagnostic biomarkers and biological targets for different disorders, and collaborating with companies, clinicians and patient organisations to ensure their successful implementation and use for patients.
Peter Lersch is a Vice President for Evonik’s Innovation Growth field Cosmetic Solutions, which is part of the business line Care Solutions. Holding a doctorate in Technical Chemistry/Chemical Engineering from the University of Essen, Germany, Peter has worked in Evonik and its predecessor companies in different R&D management and technical positions for over 33 years. His research activity is documented by over 30 German patents and numerous foreign patents and as author/co-author of more than 20 scientific articles.

Petra Louis obtained her Diploma in Biology and PhD in Microbiology from the University of Bonn, Germany, where she conducted research on osmoadaptation in halophilic bacteria. She undertook post-doctoral research at the University of Aberdeen on stress responses in Escherichia coli and on mRNA secondary structure melting in yeast, before moving to the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen in 2002. Her research concentrates on the metabolism of the gut microbiota and how it can be modulated by diet to improve human health. She utilises are wide range of technical approaches, including strictly anaerobic microbiology, molecular microbial community analysis, -omics technologies and mathematical modelling, to study the microbial ecology of fibre breakdown and fermentation product formation. Her work contributes to the development of effective and personalised nutritional strategies to improve human health via actions of the gut microbiota.
Phil is a gastrointestinal pathologist, the Yorkshire Cancer Research Centenary Professor of Pathology at the University of Leeds and has a long-standing interest in Bowel Cancer. He has had an impact on improving outcomes in this disease leading to the award of the Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Sciences UK and NIHR Senior investigator status on two occasions 2015-2023. He led the pathology in the NHS bowel cancer screening programme for 15 years and has held the Presidency of the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. He has been awarded honorary Fellowships in pathology from the Royal College of Physicians, Ireland and surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (Ad Hominem). He is an honorary fellow of 5 international Surgical Societies in the USA, UK, Chile, Argentina, Sweden and received an Honorary Doctorate from Romania.

His scientific work covers topics of translational Gastroenterology and in particular the pathology of IBD and IBS, in adults and pediatric patients. His lab is focusses on mucosal immunity and the function of neural networks within the gastrointestinal tract. His work is funded via a variety of funders such as national Science Foundation grants (NWO-Vidi-STW-Clinical fellowship), EU FP7, ECCO, and 2 Horizon2020 grants, Helmsley Foundation, Health Holland TKI topsector grants, and various public private partnership grants. Currently, he coordinates a Marie Curie training network GROWTH and a large-scale Horizon Europe consortium Methylomic that organizes clinical trial on personalized medication in chronic immune mediated diseases (IBD and Rheumatoid arthritis). He was co-founder of the Microbiome Center Amsterdam in 2016 and is member in the AGA Microbiota Council (MMT). He is co-author of >200 peer reviewed papers and has a H-index of 47. He served on the board of the scientific committees a.o. Dutch national trust for Gastro Intestinal and Lever Diseases, EU Marie Curie grants networks. He holds 5 patents, and recently co-founded the company AI-Biomics B.V., that develops predictive algorithms for disease biomarkers. He serves as a CSO on the Board of this company.
