Open Letter: DARREN TREANOR
Consultant Pathologist, Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, Clinical Professor of Pathology, University of Leeds, Adjunct Professor of Digital Pathology, Linköping University and Director, National Pathology Imaging Co-operative.

Pathologists no longer ask if they should go digital, but how they can go digital?

It was not always like this, and the adoption of Whole Slide Imaging for clinical diagnosis has been slow. But over time, greater experience with digital pathology and the availability of more evidence for its safety has led to a near-certainty that digital pathology will transform how we diagnose disease, even before considering the potential impact of advanced artificial intelligence on our work.

The impact of digital pathology does not stop at the hospital laboratory however. Investment in digital pathology can underpin transformation in research and clinical trials, with the potential to support and grow the life sciences industry.

At the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC), my team and I are driving a project to deliver and install digital slide scanners to serve millions of people across the UK, including the roll-out of two national networks to support specialist services. These projects will generate more than 2.4 million pathology images – 3 Petabytes of data – each year. Storing this data safely and supporting its use in research presents another unique set of challenges!

I am delighted to give the opening keynote address at the 10th Digital Pathology & AI Congress: Europe at a brand new venue. At the meeting, speakers will explore the latest advances and applications of digital pathology, the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning to diagnosis and clinical research, and how this digital revolution is transforming the laboratory. Case studies will explore the role of digital pathology in pharma and industry.

I look forward to giving an update on how the National Pathology Imaging Co-operative is deploying clinical digital pathology at a national scale and has built a platform for research and innovation.

See you in London on December 7!

Last year’s meeting at London Heathrow sold out. So we have moved to a new venue.
The nearest airport is London City. Eurostar is also a good option. There are also excellent public transport options.

Event App
We have reduced waste by replacing printed documentation with an app. Make sure you have it downloaded to your devices in time for the meeting.

Catering
You will have some great food choices while you are with us but now, we have worked with the caterer to increase the proportion of plant-based items. We have also built a plan with the venue to avoid waste through how they serve meals and how leftovers are processed.

Travel
An international meeting does involve travel but where it is practical, please consider more sustainable alternatives to flying. The app will also have a discussion space to arrange ride shares.
