In this presentation, Jeanette Norton explored the complexity of nitrogen fertility management which is due to the microbial processes of mineralization and nitrification. A promising approach, which is just beginning to be understood, are the interactions of nitrifying organisms with plants or microbes producing biological nitrification inhibitors. Climate-smart agriculture needs to be carefully optimized for nitrogen management strategies to remain effective while reducing environmental impacts.
