NAFLD and Type 2 Diabetes: A Vicious Spiral

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a silent metabolic liver disease that is strongly associated with obesity. NAFLD is also strongly associated with type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and other metabolic and vascular risk factors. It is now established that NAFLD is a multisystem disease with extra-hepatic consequences beyond the liver. NAFLD increases risk of T2DM, cardiovascular disease (CVD), chronic kidney disease (CKD) and certain cancers. This presentation will discuss the relationships between NAFLD, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and T2DM that form part of a vicious cycle of spiralling and worsening metabolic disease.
