Jingxin Liu is now an assistant professor in Xian Jiaotong-Liverpool University, China. He received his M.Sc in signal processing and communication from the University of Edinburgh, U.K., and Ph.D in computer science from the University of Nottingham, U.K., in 2013 and 2018, respectively. He has two years industry experience in a pathological diagnostic centre as an AI technical director after his post-doc research at Shenzhen University. Jingxin Lius research focuses on medical image analysis, especially digital pathology and microscope image analysis, computational pathology, image processing and computer vision. He has published more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers, such as Transactions on Medical Imaging (T-MI), Medical Image Analysis (MIA), Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (J-BHI), International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (ISBI) and Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI). He is also the reviewer of T-MI and ISBI. In the past 5 years, he has successfully attracted over 3 million RMB research funds from both academia and industry, including the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) young scientist programme and the Natural Science Foundation of Jiangsu Higher Education Institutions of China (NSF-JHEIC) general programme.
Nasir Rajpoot is the GSK Professor of Computational Pathology and the founding Director of the Tissue Image Analytics (TIA) Centre in the Computer Science department at the University of Warwick. His current research focus is on the research and development of AI and machine learning algorithms for the study of histological and multi-omic markers, with applications to early detection of cancer and stratification of cancer patients in terms of recurrence, progression and response to therapy. Professor Rajpoot has been active in the Digital & Computational Pathology (DCP) community for over two decades now. He has published over 250 research papers in top journals and conferences in the area and has delivered over 80 invited and keynote talks since 2017. Rajpoot has held the Royal Society Wolfson Fellowship and the Turing Fellowship, and acts as the co-Director of 15m PathLAKE Centre of Excellence (CoE) on AI in pathology.
Masataka Kawai serves as an Assistant Professor at the University of Yamanashi, where he works as a clinical pathologist. His areas of expertise include digital and AI pathology, as well as gynecological pathology. As a member of the Japanese Society of Digital Pathology and an executive of the Pathology AI Implementation Association, he offers leadership and guidance. With six years of experience in clinical pathology and AI research, Masataka has been actively involved in the implementation, validation, and distribution of deep learning-based AI models since 2017, promoting digital transformation in pathology. His primary interests lie in utilizing AI technology and data to enhance pathological diagnosis and streamline workflows. Masataka’s research delves into generative models using generative adversarial networks (GANs) and large-scale training of deep learning models. He has published an AI model that transforms renal biopsy images using GANs, and recently developed a benchmark framework that comprises three public pathological datasets to compare various upstream large-scale training settings for downstream pathological tasks.
Dr. Hongming Xu is an Associate Professor of School of Biomedical Engineering at Dalian University of Technology, China. He received his PhD degree in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Alberta, Canada, and completed his Postdoc Fellow Training in Department of Quantitative Health Sciences at Cleveland Clinic Foundation, USA. His research has been focusing on artificial intelligence in biomedical imaging fields, such as computational pathology, medical image computing, imaging informatics, and machine learning. He has published more than 30 peer-reviewed international journal and conference papers. He hosted and participated in several research projects including the National Key Research and Development Program of China, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China, etc.
Desiree Abdurrachim, PhD, is an associate principal scientist at Merck Research Laboratories, MSD. She currently leads the AI digital pathology/spatial biology team within the Biomarker & Target Sciences, Discovery Cardiometabolic Diseases. With her team, she integrates the advances in imaging technology and AI/data science with biology, to help understand complex disease biology, gain insights into drug mechanisms of actions, and enable novel biomarker discovery. Her team also fosters and leverages on the strong collaboration and partnership within the community of academic research and emerging technology vendors in Singapore and Asia. Prior to joining MSD in 2018, she had about 10 years of research experience, developing Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy techniques to study cardiac metabolism in diabetic animal models in vivo. She holds a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering from Bandung Institute of Technology (Indonesia), a masters and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands).
Prof. Lee is the associate professor at department of pathology, College of medicine, Seoul National University. She specialized in hepato-pancreatic biliary pathology, renal pathology, and bone & soft tissue pathology. She majored in computational science and medicine at Seoul National University and received her doctorate in college of Medicine about the genetic profiling of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma in 2008. Prof. Lee led the digital pathology project at SNUH in 2018, where she introduced a digital pathology system for primary diagnosis; the first in Korea. Besides heading the digital pathology project at SNUH, Prof. Lee is passionate about advocating the value of digital pathology, automation of pathology workflow for primary diagnosis and establishment of data-pipeline for computational pathology. Prof. Lee are operating PAIP (pathology AI platform), a research data platform for the development of pathological image analysis algorithms based on the artificial intelligence technology, and have been planning an AI development challenge based on pathological images every year since 2019 to share information among IT developers around the world and introduce the feature of pathology images.
Since 2013, Mattias Rantalainen leads the Predictive Medicine group at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institute in Sweden. He is the co-founder and CTO of Stratipath a company developing AI-based precision pathology solutions for clinical use. Dr. Rantalainen completed his PhD at Imperial College London with a thesis focused on multivariate pattern recognition methods and their applications in the biomedical domain, followed by postdoctoral research at the Department of Statistics and at the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics at University of Oxford. Dr. Rantalainen focus on medical research that is driven by statistical machine learning, artificial intelligence (AI) and large population representative data sets. His research is centered on projects in areas of cancer precision medicine and computational pathology. Dr. Rantalainen leads the CHIME project at Karolinska Institute, focused on large population representative studies in computational pathology. He is the coordinator of the Swedish AI Precision Pathology (SwAIPP) consortium, and the ABCAP consortium, which are both focused on developing and translating AI-based computational cancer precision pathology. He is also leading the initiative Data-Driven Research at KI (DDKI) at Karolinska Institutet.
Tetsuya TSUKAMOTO is a full time Professor in the Department of Diagnostic Pathology, Fujita Health University School of Medicine, Toyoake, Japan. MD (1987) and PhD (1991) in Mie University Graduate School of Medicine, Tsu, Japan. Involved in diagnostic and experimental pathology field, steering the clinical, teaching, and research works. Interested in cancer research, especially gastrointestinal and lung cancers. Currently involved in image analysis in pathological and cytological fields. Board Member of Japanese Society of Digital Pathology. Member of Japanese Society of Pathology, Japanese Society of Clinical Cytology, and Japanese Cancer Association. He has over 200 peer reviewed research publications and 20 book chapters in oncological and experimental pathology to his credit.
Dr. Yu Weimiao obtained his Ph.D. from National University of Singapore (NUS) in 2007, majoring in image processing and machine vision. He joined Agency of Science, Technology and Research(A*STAR) in 2007 and moved his research position to Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology (IMCB) in 2010. He is currently heading Computational Digital Pathology Lab (CDPL) in Bioinformatics Institute (BII) and Computational Molecular & Pathology Lab (CMPL) in IMCB to deepen and extend the R&D with clinical and industrial partners. His research interests are Computational Biomedical Image Analysis and Quantitative Imaging Informatics in biomedical image. Dr. YUs research outcomes were published in top international peer reviewed journals, such as Nature Cell Biology, Nature Communication, Current Biology, etc. His previous research outcomes were successfully commercialized and made an impact in the diagnosis and drug discovery. To enhance the application of machine learning and AI in clinical diagnosis/prognosis, he founded a biotech company in Singapore, known A!maginostic Pte. Ltd. He established a world class platform for the immunodiagnosis at tissue level. The platform allows the researchers, clinicians and pharma to profile the patient immune signature for the purpose of diagnosis, prognosis and drug response study.
The widespread adoption of computational pathology in the field of cancer diagnostics poses challenges in Australia due to various factors, including infrastructure, funding, regulatory frameworks, and healthcare system dynamics. Subsequently, digital pathology and AI technologies are still very much an emerging tool in Australias diagnostic landscape compared to many other developed territories. Despite the obstacles, Histopaths research and development efforts continue to refine and validate AI algorithms, establish standardized protocols, while addressing the nations regulatory and ethical considerations. This case study will demonstrate Histopaths pioneering endeavours in Australia to maximize the utility of digital pathology and AI in our histopathology laboratory, while overcoming the obstacles to routine clinical applications.
Dr. Miho Oyasu is an expert in tissue-based assays, who has been leading Immunohistochemistry efforts and IHC groups in academia, pharmaceutical companies, and biotech companies. She graduated from Kobe University in Japan with a PhD degree in Life Sciences focusing on Protein Kinase C by microscopic studies in the Central Nervous System. She started her professional career at University of California, San Francisco in USA as a post-doctoral fellow where she studied alcohol addiction and signal transduction in CNS. Then she transferred to the industry and expanded her research areas to oncology and beyond. Since then, she has been contributing to drug development in discovery, preclinical, translational and clinical stages. Her expertise is in diverse disease areas, currently focusing on Immuno-oncology, Autoimmune disease, and Infectious disease, serving as an associate director in preclinical/translational department at IGM Biosciences. She is passionate about promoting the true importance and power of immunohistochemistry and other tissue-based assays in the drug development process.
Professional Pathologist with 10+ years of cross functional skill set and experience in diagnostic and research sector. Rich experience in areas of Translational Research, Digital Pathology, Immunohistochemistry and Oncopathology. Currently leading IHC efforts in Solid tumors at BBRC, Bangalore, India, for last 7years, developing, standardizing and implementing fit for purpose, clinical grade assays, for use in Clinical and translational studies supporting patient stratification and companion diagnostic tool development.
His practice and academic interests are breast/gynecological pathology, cytopathology and digital pathology. He completed his residency, fellowship in Breast/Gynecologic Pathology and Cytopathology at UPMC, Pittsburgh, PA. He has published more than 150 scientific articles and many book chapters. He is currently served as section or associate editor/editorial board for several Pathology Journals and served in multiple national society committees. He has presented lectures on many national/international pathology conferences and teaching courses.
Alton B.(Brad) Farris, MD, MBA, is Director of the Laboratory of Nephropathology and Electron Microscopy at Emory University Hospital and a Professor in the Emory Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He participates in kidney, gastrointestinal, and liver pathology clinical services; and his research interests include transplantation pathology and the application of artificial intelligence/machine learning to whole slide images. Recently, along these lines, he has helped co-lead the Banff Foundation for Allograft Pathology Digital Pathology Working Group. He has served as the pathologist for National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Trials in Organ Transplantation (CTOT) trials. His past research also includes topics in neoplastic pathology with which he has collaborated with the American Cancer Society, and he is a member of the Cancer Prevention and Control Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University. Almost all his work has extended from the “bench” to the “bedside” withhis clinical and research colleagues, extending from more basic science animal models, including nonhuman primate studies, to more clinical/translational studies. His clinical, research, and teaching goals as a pathologist are to correlate pathologic parameters to clinical data, treatment, and outcome, particularly in his fields of renal, gastrointestinal, and transplantation pathology; and ultimately, he aims to make the world a better place by contributing to enhanced, value-added patient care.
Dr. Ren is an assistant professor of pathology at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. She received an MD degree from a medical school in China, obtained a Ph.D. degree, and completed residency and fellowship training in the United States. She is board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and trained as a subspecialty surgical pathologist in the areas of surgical oncology and Gastrointestinal/liver pathology. Her practice includes the gastrointestinal tract, pancreatobiliary and liver pathology, and genitourinary pathology. Her research interests lie in carcinogenesis and genetic alteration of colorectal, pancreatic, renal, and bladder carcinomas. At DHMC, she is actively involved in the areas of digital pathology and image analysis studies. With her expertise in genitourinary and gastrointestinal pathology, she helps to develop deep-learning models for the diagnosis of Barretts esophagus and dysplasia, celiac disease, idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease, colon polyps, colorectal carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, and bladder cancer.
As a research data scientist at AstraZeneca, Irinas work focuses on applying imaging processing and state-of-the-art AI algorithms in computer vision to analyse whole slide images of histopathology slides to inform AstraZenecas research. She is particularly interested in exploring Real World Evidence slides and connecting different data modalities. Irina holds a MSc degree in Applied Statistical Modelling and Health Informatics from Kings College London. Her undergraduate study was in Applied Statistics and Machine Learning
Andy Nguyen received his BS and MS degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Houston. He obtained his MD degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch-Galveston and received his pathology residency training from the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Texas Medical Center at Houston. After completing his residency, he stayed on as a faculty member and is currently a Full Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He has served as the medical director of Hematology and Coagulation Laboratory at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center (1993-2021). He has clinical and research interests in hematopathology, coagulopathy, and pathology informatics. Dr. Nguyen has published numerous scientific papers, written many invited review articles, and contributed to several textbooks. He has also received multiple teaching awards from the Pathology Department and from the Office of the Dean.
Jin Tae Kwak received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, USA in 2012. He earned his Masters of Science degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Purdue University, USA in 2007 and his Bachelors of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering from Korea University, Korea in 2005. In 2012, He joined Center for Interventional Oncology, Clinical Center, National Institutes of Health, USA as a Research Fellow. He served as a tenure-track faculty member in the department of Computer Science and Engineering at Sejong University from March 2016 to August 2020. He joined School of Electrical Engineering at Korea University in September 2020. His research interests include multimodal medical imaging, digital and computational pathology, computer-aided diagnosis, radiology-pathology correlation, data mining, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning.
Jun Xu is the Vice Dean of the School of Artificial Intelligence and Executive Director of the Institute for AI in Medicine at Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology. In 2007, he received his PhD in Control Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University. Then he was a postdoctoral scientist and visiting professor at the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering, Rutgers University and Case Western Reserve University, USA, respectively. He serves as the Deputy Director of the Medical Image Analysis Committee of the Jiangsu Artificial Intelligence Society, a member of the Digital Pathology and Artificial Intelligence Committee of the Chinese Society of Pathology, the Chinese Medical Association, and the rotating Chairman of the Fourth Medical Imaging Computing Seminar. He was listed as one of the World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford in “Artificial Intelligence and Image Processing” and “Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging” by Stanford University.His research interests are medical image computing; computational pathology; digital pathology; computed aided disease prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis based on quantitative analysis of radiological and histological images.
